Mountain

The Kilimanjaro mountain range is positioned 340 km south of the ecuator, at the border between Tanzania and Kenia, in the north-west of Tanzania, at 500 km from Dar es Salaam, 200 km from Nairobi and 560 km from Lake Victoria. A high plateau with an altitude between 750 and 1000 m surrounds the mountain range, to the est  the Pare mountains (2.463 m), to the west the Tanzanian plateau, to the south the plains inhabited by the masai people and only 70 km away from the famous Mount Meru, 4.562 m.

Kilimanjaro has the highest peak in Africa, Uhuru Peak 5.892 m. The second highest mountain range is Batian,  325 km away in the Mount Kenya massif, followed by the Margherita Peak, north-west of Kilimanjaro, 898 km away in the Ruwenzori mountains.

Routes

There are 7 routes to the summit bearing the following names: Marangu, Mweka, Umbwe, Machame, Shira, Lemosho and Rongai.
Choosing the ideal one is not actually an easy thing to do, each having specific elements that a climber has to take into consideration. There are some relative easy routes, some moderate one and some that are actually dangerous. While some favor an optimal acclimatization, others are more suitable during the rainy season and others have better camping options.

The Machame Route:

This is the route we have chosen for our climb and one of the most beautiful. It is considered the most difficult of the seven and does not have hut accommodation. It begins in the south-west side of the mountain, in the area named the Machame Gate. It takes minimum 6 days to climb it, though 7 days are usually recommended. The descent is in Mweka, to the south-east of the mountain. Due to the western ascent and partly northern descent,

Machame offers spectacular views of Kilimanjaro. It crosses extraordinary places like the Shira plateau, Barranco and the Lava Tower.
Machame is ideal for those who enjoy a more difficult ascent and are confident in their ability to spend long periods of time in more steep terrain.

One of the purposes of this expedition, along with summiting the highest peak on the African continent in an entirely Romanian expedition, is bringing awareness to the environmental issues that affect the international alpine environment. Kilimanjaro is one of the last places in Africa where snow can be found being more and more threatened by global warming. As people who highly appreciate the mountains and their beauties, we hope to bring more understanding of the impact of our actions on this unique environment, both to the Romanian and International public.
